Episode 18: Nadia Comaneci

When I was little the 1976 Olympics took place and we were all very excited ... See animation.
When I was little I shared a room with my sister. We had two twin beds, a little table, and of course, two wooden chairs. We would have a sort of contest in which we would each put a chair on top of our bed, sit in the chair, and fling ourselves backwards. The winner was the person who hit the mattress first. Occasionally we would misjudge our aim and one of us would crash to the floor. In retrospect, how we survived without breaking any bones I will never know.
We were pretty fearless at the time. Although as an adult I learned to sky dive so I'm still pretty fearless I guess.
I remember crying during the closing ceremonies of those Olympics because it would be 4 years until they happened again. Now it seems they happen all the time.
Posted by: Marisa at August 16, 2004 12:38 PMI wanted to be Dorothy Hamill in the worst way. I HAD to have her haircut, so my mother took me to the salon. The guy cut my hair and insisted I looked just like Dorothy. Except I had baby fine blonde hair, and Dorothy thick dark hair, so of course the cut looked completely different on me. And I had to skate every week, so my sister-in-law would take me to the skating rink. I had a few lessons, but my parents couldn't afford real training. So I had to pretend. And then my sister-in-law became pregnant, and couldn't take me skating anymore. My nephew is now 28 year old, and he's still blamed for me not being an Olympic Star.
Posted by: jackie at August 15, 2004 09:04 PMIt's amazing we all survived childhood. My brother Peter once hit a golfball into my brother Douglas's head.
I wonder who will be the Nadia Comaneci of this Olympics?
